Dear new homeschool mama,

For all you mamas out there praying about embarking on a homeschool journey, I have some words of encouragement for you.

First off, bravo! Bravo for being brave and doing hard things. For trusting the calling God has given you. As a first generation homeschooler myself, I want you to know that you do not have to know everything now. You can learn. You can develop skills like patience (yes, I know, it’s hard, but Jesus is really sufficient). You can be your children’s advocate and teacher and mother all at the same time.

Two, take it a year at a time. Stick with this plan for at least 6 weeks before tweaking it, but keep some consistency. Next year, you can pick a different LA or Math. You can go from classical to charlotte mason to unschooling to Waldorf. And if you don’t know what any of those things are, great, when I started 4 years ago I had NO idea either.

Pay attention to your children. The goals of homeschool begin at relationship and pursue a love of learning. We get to focus on what is true, good, and beautiful. And we get to do that at a pace that helps our children to flourish and thrive. We don’t have to rush. We can breathe and enjoy.

And real talk… you don’t have everything you need to make this work. I’m sorry, but you don’t. But God is with you. He loves your children and as long as you follow Him, He will sanctify you (and them) and fill in all the gaps.

Praying for you and cheering you on!
